Building a Productive Life That Feels Good
Hey there,
Couldn’t we all be just a little more productive?
Whether you’ve got a solid system or feel like you're duct-taping your life together, most of us could use a tune-up.
Back in the Industrial Revolution, productivity was all about squeezing the most out of the least—more cotton, fewer hands, maximum profit.
Fast forward to now, and productivity isn’t just about profit margins—it’s about protecting your time.
More time for family, side projects, staring at walls in peace… you get it.
Today, being productive means creating systems that help you feel like you actually accomplished something instead of just surviving your to-do list.
That feeling of “good tired” when you close your laptop and know you gave it your all?
That’s the gold standard.
So how do you build a productive life that doesn’t feel like you’re auditioning to be a robot?
For starters, stop relying entirely on yourself.
Even if you're fired up about the big picture, day-to-day motivation will flake on you.
That's why I outsource discipline to systems—having my wife Mel or a friends hold me accountable with a deadline, and tech tools like Asana, Beeminder (which fines you for slacking), and Habitica (which turns tasks into a game—because yes, I’ll work for fake gold coins).
These tools are like productivity training wheels.
They help in two major ways: first, they keep important stuff from slipping through the cracks.
Because nothing fuels anxiety like the vague feeling you’ve forgotten something crucial.
Second, they build accountability into your life, so you're less likely to ghost your goals.
At its core, my system is simple: a to-do list, a calendar, and a note-taking app.
I use Asana to break down life into manageable categories—each company, my personal stuff, all living in tidy lanes.
My calendar is strictly for time-bound events. No rogue tasks allowed.
And when life starts to feel like it’s spinning out? I do a brain dump—everything I’m worried about goes onto a page, then I tackle it bit by bit.
If you’re overwhelmed, don’t build the whole system at once.
Ask yourself: where’s the stress coming from? Are you missing meetings? Losing track of tasks? Drowning in email? Start there.
Speaking of email: it’s a productivity black hole.
We’ve all faced the post-vacation inbox of doom — if yours has 4,000 unread messages, it may as well have zero, ‘cause you're not reading them.
So, declare email bankruptcy. ‘Star’ what matters, archive the rest, and move on.
People’s expectations are shaped by your past behavior, so if you’re always quick to reply, they’ll expect that forever.
Set new norms — your sanity will thank you.
Even with the perfect system, there’s a limit. The modern hustle mentality can sneakily drain all your joy—even from work you love.
I realized this when Mel said, “You don’t sound excited about your work anymore.”
She was right. If I’m dreading the thing I built from passion, I’ve taken a wrong turn.
I used to think slowing down meant losing momentum.
But when I finally allowed myself to breathe—cutting back on episodes of my podcast, giving myself space—something wild happened: creativity came rushing back.
Turns out, the spark thrives in stillness, not stress.
So yes, be productive. Build systems. Conquer inboxes.
But don’t forget to leave room for the stuff that makes life feel good.
Have a wonderful week, all.
